Biography

Arthur Clues was one of Australia's greatest ever forwards, although Australian fans only ever caught a brief glimpse of his talents — he played most of his career in England after four seasons with Western Suburbs.

Clues was just 22 when he played three Tests against Gus Risman's English tourists in 1946. A year later, he was lost to the Australian game when he signed a lucrative contract with the Leeds club.

Tall (183cm), solidly built (96kg) and strong, Clues was a towering performer in the Leeds second row and in eight seasons with the Yorkshire club amassed 238 first-class games.

He joined nearby Hunslet after a dispute with Leeds' management and played a further 83 games before his retirement in 1957.

Although playing in England denied him the chance to further represent Australia, Clues made regular appearances for Other Nationalities, and his agility and speed were reflected in his 108 career tries.

A talented all-round sportsman, Clues played first-grade cricket in Sydney before arriving in Leeds, and he holds the unique distinction of having scored a try and made a century at Headingley and at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
