Rising Rabbitoh Murray relishing impact role

In pre-season, one of Cameron Murray's chief goals was to nail down a starting spot in South Sydney's forward pack.

With Sam Burgess the first choice lock, it was ambitious from the talented youngster.

The 20-year-old has come off the interchange bench in recent rounds, and is relishing his new role.

Murray, who is averaging 40 minutes a game, is starting to see the rapid impact he is having after analysing his performance with coach Anthony Seibold.

"While I'm not getting as many minutes as I would like, I'm feeling really confident," Murray said.

"I've played extra minutes over the last couple of weeks which I'm really happy about.

"Seibs has narrowed my focus and made me aware of the role that I play and the strengths I bring to the team.

"I'm not kicking stones about not playing not playing 80 minutes or starting, I'm just looking forward to perform in the role I've been assigned this year."

The Rabbitohs have played three top eight sides in recent weeks, only winning once.

Murray acknowledged his team need to lift collectively.

"We have had a few pretty brutal lessons over the last couple of weeks against the Roosters and Broncos," he said.

"We need to get back to where we were a few weeks ago. Our completion rate needs to improve, our defence needs to improve as well.

"If we defend how we did against the Broncos (last Thursday), I don't think we will go very far in the finals."

Siebold gave his troops the weekend off to refresh themselves before taking on a dangerous Raiders outfit this Saturday at GIO Stadium.

"We have a long turnaround (nine days) so Seibs told us that we will have a few more sessions on the field than we normally do," Murray said.

"We need to turn up with the right attitude and a growth mindset. "Canberra are coming off a pretty strong win against the Roosters, so they will be tough.

"They fight to the death and that's a really good attribute to have as a team. We will have to be really good to counter their strong attack and their big boys through the middle."

South Sydney are also hoping Greg Inglis, Alex Johnson, Campbell Graham and Zane Musgrove will be available for selection.
