What Maroons will be watching on Wednesday

Move over MAFS, there will soon be a new No.1 in the battle to be the most watched show of 2019.

Although the audience for game one of the Holden State of Origin series couldn't eclipse the 2.61 million people who watched the finale to Married At First Sight in April, history shows a game three decider will attract more eyeballs than any other program so far this year.

Two years ago when the Maroons triumphed 22-6 at Suncorp Stadium a television audience of 3.652 million tuned in, only just usurped by the AFL grand final as the most watched show of 2017.

But as the nation prepares to sit in front of the box for their Wednesday night Origin ritual, what will the stars of the show be watching in preparation?

Queensland forward Josh McGuire has a movie-going tradition that will continue on Wednesday but, as is usually the case, he will be doing so on his own.

"He gets too worked up at his movies, and goes to terrible ones," Maroons hooker Ben Hunt tells pan66.com.

"Movie recommendations I've had off him have been shocking. I'll let him go do his own movies."

Matt Gillett won't be joining his former Broncos teammate at a screening of Spiderman: Far From Home.

"Nah, I'd fall asleep," Gillett said.

"He loves his movies, 'Moose'. He's the one to go to for an opinion about movies and whether or not to go and see them. He's the man to see."

Most Origin combatants will prefer to relax in the confines of their hotel room and we asked seven Queensland players to reveal what they tune in to in the lead-up to the biggest show in sport.

Josh McGuire

"I always go to the movies on game day, out to the cinema if I can. If somebody wants to come they can but I don't make anyone come with me or anything. I'll just put it on the WhatsApp and see if any of the boys want to go. If not I'll just cruise by myself, grab a Diet Coke and a sandwich and just relax. If it's a day game and I can't get to the movies I'll watch a TV series. I've been watching True Detective at the moment. The second series wasn't as good but the third one was pretty good. That's the one where he's got dementia. The first one was the best one but that's usually the way it is."

Corey Oates

"I usually have a little nap and watch half a movie, whatever's on TV. I can't do what 'Moose' does, I just like to relax in the hotel and chill out. With the kid now I never get time to watch much TV but I did watch Home Alone 2 at 3 in the morning a month ago. It was the best thing ever."

Ben Hunt

"I usually go looking for something that I haven't seen yet, a recent movie that I haven't seen and zone out for a couple of hours. I usually go for a comedy or an action movie but I've been re-watching Game of Thrones lately. I'm right into the medieval stuff at the moment."

DCE: One game won't define me

Christian Welch

"In the morning I like to go to a café by myself and read the paper and then I'll watch a show and have a sleep. Some people like Tim Glasby are real particular about what they watch but I just like watching whatever's new. I'm watching The Handmaid's Tale at the moment. That's a great series."

Tim Glasby

"After the team walk I'll have lunch, watch a bit of South Park and then have a sleep. I watch South Park most days before I go to sleep. But it's not just South Park, I'll watch other cartoons as well. Generally they're things that I've watched before so it doesn't stimulate me too much and I can just doze off while I'm watching."

Felise Kaufusi

"I'm on to Animal Kingdom at the moment on Netflix. It's all on the phone. Netflix and chill."

Maroons to make call on Gillett on Tuesday

Matt Gillett

"All I do on game-day is make sure I have a power nap, whether it's an hour, 40 minutes or 20 minutes after lunch. I've got kids so when it's home games I'm just usually at home doing whatever they want to do. Game-day can drag on if you're just sitting at home thinking about footy so I just do whatever I'd normally do in a day and keep the mind of what's coming. Spend time with the kids and keep busy."
