A last-minute Jake Turpin try may have saved the day but Broncos coach Anthony Seibold praised his team's defensive game in Thursday's 18-14 win over the Cowboys which kept their finals campaign on track.

"Obviously with a result like that when you score a try right at the death, it's always really pleasing to see the guys get a result. I thought we deserved to win too," Seibold said.

"If you look defensively, I thought we were really strong this week, we only missed five tackles for the game and didn't have any line breaks against us. It was an enormous improvement from last week."

Challenging the players mentally before the game and taking a 'less talk, more action' approach in defence was the message from Seibold heading into the Queensland derby.

"We were much better defensively. Anytime you don't concede any line breaks for the game and you miss less than 10 tackles, it's a good day defensively for you as a team," he said.

"The areas that we need to be better with is the other side of the footy. I just think we were really good marching down the field but we were really frantic attacking the try-line of the Cowboys. We've got to continue to improve there."

Match Highlights: Cowboys v Broncos

The Broncos looked like they were panicking and pushing passes at times, and while Seibold said offloading's a big part of his team's attack he did point to some errors from his bench forwards.

"Offloading's a weapon for us. It creates momentum and applies some pressure on the opposition defensive sides," he said.

"I always talk about sided offloads, there were times where we just throwing it out the back door, so you've got to be smart about it.

"If I'm critical of our bench, they've been really good and energetic for a long time but our three young middle forwards, we had five errors between the three of them, so that put us under pressure."

The win moved the Broncos into the top eight, temporarily at least. They meet the Panthers next Friday at Suncorp Stadium.
