Storm pivot Cameron Munster.

They're only in the early days of striking up their combination at club level but Cameron Munster wants to accelerate his partnership with Harry Grant leading into Queensland's Origin title defence.

While Munster is an Origin veteran with 10 caps for the Maroons, Grant's only game for his state was when he came off the bench to score the match-winning try in last year's Ampol State of Origin series decider at Suncorp Stadium.

Grant is in contention to win the starting hooker role with the Maroons this year, even if he still has to come off the bench at the Storm behind fellow dummy-half Brandon Smith.

While their on-field combination is still considered a work in progress by Munster, the Storm five-eighth is hoping it gets the chance to shine at Origin level this year.

"Harry is a very respectful person, extremely talented and he is always got his ears open with some of the options I tell him to take," Munster noted.

"He is willing to learn and I am trying to learn off him and get that combination going with him and if I play some consistent footy this year, I might be playing with him at the Maroons this year.

"If we get that combination going it is going to make it even better for Queensland."

There have been calls for Grant to replace Smith in the starting side for the Storm, but Munster is unsure as to the best way for experienced coach Craig Bellamy to utilise the duo.

Magic Round: One month to go

However, he is adamant there is a place for both players in the Storm side.

"Harry is a talent, there is no doubt about it, but so is Brandon Smith," Munster said.

"They are both different players, but similar runners of the ball.

"Brandon is very hard to handle one on one, while Harry has got good footwork and chooses the right option nine times out of 10.

"They have both come up very well for us and we are lucky to have them in our team."

The Storm occupy fourth place on the Telstra Premiership ladder with four victories from their first six games of the season, but Munster knows his team still has plenty of work to do if they want to claim back-to-back premierships.

"The two teams we lost to are top-quality teams in the Panthers and the Eels," Munster added.

"It is going to be a good tight competition at the back end of the year and we have just got to make sure we play good consistent footy."
