Warriors fullback Reece Walsh is set to part ways with the club at the end of the 2022 season after officials confirmed a "major change" in his personal circumstances impacted on his ability to move to Auckland.
Walsh, who was under contract for the 2023 season with an option in his favour for 2024, will now remain in Australia at the end of the year, with Warriors CEO Cameron George confirming the club had given him permission to negotiate with the Broncos.
"About six weeks ago, Reece and his agent approached myself and [general manager of football] Craig Hodges and told us his circumstances had changed and we sympathise with him around that situation," George said on Wednesday.
"He had all intentions to move to New Zealand as he had previously stated but his personal circumstances had changed dramatically and we certainly sympathise with him around the situation he was in that point and still is.
"I made it extremely clear to Reece and his agent that we were not going to entertain any form of release until such time we had an option equal if not better to what Reece brings to our footy club.
"Today we announced that . His family is in New Zealand and the Raiders have been fantastic in their approach to the situation and he was permitted to talk to us only on the basis of rejoining his family.
"It's something our club prides itself on in terms of understanding the personal challenges of moving overseas in the circumstances Reece was in and equally being able to secure the services of Charnze for the same reason to reunite with his family.
"It's only in last 72 hours we gave Reece’s agent official permission to negotiate with another club, that being Brisbane, because six weeks ago we asked Reece what was his preference and that was the Broncos.
"We wanted to keep control of the discussions and not turn it into a bidding war across a number of clubs and they identified that clubs for us and that was the club we gave them permission to go and talk to on that basis."
George said Walsh was committed to seeing out the season with the Warriors and doing his bit to help them climb from 13th on the ladder in the remaining eight matches.
The teenager enjoyed a stunning debut season in 2021 but has found the going much tougher in 2022 and his off-field circumstances have clearly had an impact.
Nicoll-Klokstad, meanwhile, has developed into an elite No.1 over the past four seasons after launching his career with the Warriors in 2017.
“Having Charnze back with the Warriors is going to be tremendous for us as a club and also for him personally,” said George. "There's huge raps on him as a player but there's even bigger raps on him as a person."
“He brings undoubted qualities as one of the best fullbacks in the game as well as so much off the field as a wonderful young man.
“He’s so excited about coming back to the Warriors, being home and being closer to his family."
