'I love how families can play together': Tonegato takes on NRL Wheelchair role

Dual international Emma Tonegato has added to her sporting repertoire after taking on the role of Ambassador for NRL Wheelchair.

Tonegato is one of the most decorated athletes in Australian sport, having played for the Jillaroos in their inaugural World Cup win in 2013 as a teenager and returning in 2022 to help them to retain the trophy for a third time.

In between, she won an Olympic Gold Medal with the Australian Rugby 7s team at the 2016 Games in Rio and received the Dally M Medal as player of the year in the postponed 2021 NRLW season, which was played in early 2022.

A qualified paediatric occupational therapist, Tonegato performs the role of Equal Access Program Lead for the Sharks, with whom she is signed until 2026. 

WRLA Chair Martin Meredith said Tonegato’s extensive background as an elite athlete and her passion for inclusivity and community made her a valuable addition to the Wheelchair Rugby League Australia family.

The star playmaker's association with wheelchair rugby league began through her involvement with NRL Wheelchair Cronulla Sharks activations last year.

As Ambassador for NRL Wheelchair, Tonegato is eager to extend her support to the wheelchair version of the game and promote it to a broader audience.

“I love everything about Wheelchair Rugby League. I love that you can play with or without a disability and how families, siblings and partners play together. When I saw the game in action, it was really exciting.”

“I love how wheelchair rugby league has such a great sense of community. I’ve got three brothers, and I would never be able to play on a field with them, but wheelchair rugby league would offer me that chance.”

Meredith said Tonegato’s dedication to inclusivity and her passion for making a positive difference align perfectly with Wheelchair Rugby League Australia’s values.

"Emma's appointment as an Ambassador will raise the sport’s profile and inspire more people across Australia to get involved," he said.
