Tennis star Thompson joins Wests Tigers training

Wests Tigers were joined at Friday’s field session by Australian tennis star, Jordan Thompson.

Thompson, a diehard Wests Tigers fan, is in the best form of his career to date, currently ranked 26th in the world in singles and third in the world in doubles (both career highs).

He was previously invited for a training session in the lead-up to the 2024 NRL season and once again took part in the team’s fitness sessions on the day.

The 30-year-old was ecstatic at being given the opportunity to train with the squad.

“I just love it. Rugby league's my favourite sport,” Thompson said.

“When I'm away for the whole season, I'll still get up for every Tigers game.

“To get the opportunity to come out here and train with the team is incredible. I'll never knock that back.”

A highlight of attending training for the tennis ace is having the opportunity to interact with some of his boyhood heroes.

In fact, his all-time favourite player is a new member of the coaching staff.

In my room at home growing up, I had a poster of Lleyton Hewitt and another framed picture of Brett Hodgson on the wall.

“I've actually never asked for a photo or a signature from anyone in my life but I think I might have to ask one off Hodgo.”

“Chris Heighington’s here too and Benji's running the show, so it's pretty special for a fan like me.”

Thompson's impressive recent form makes him well-placed for a strong showing at the 2025 Australian Open in January.

Furthering his purple patch into the Aussie summer would cap off an outstanding year for the Sydney local.

"I think it’s every Australian’s favourite time of the year but in saying that, the Australian Open hasn't been my best Grand Slam by any stretch.

“I've never made it past the second round of singles or doubles there, which I’ve done in every other Grand Slam, so I’m just hoping next year's the year.

“I'm just really looking forward to this Aussie summer.”
